Interview with an Industry Insider: Stephanie Fowler

Stephanie Fowler

After a year long hiatus in which I started my not-so-new-anymore job as a Community Manager (my 1-year anniversary is coming up soon – how time flies!), I am finally back to blogging. So without further ado, it’s my pleasure to start 2015 off with a brand new Interview with an Industry Insider with none other than Stephanie Fowler.

1. Who are you? Where do you work?

My name is Stephanie – you can find me on most social platforms at @stephfowler_. I’m an Account Coordinator with Dunn PR and have been in the PR world for just over a year now.

2. Tell us your story. Why PR? How’d you get here?

I graduated in 2014 with my undergraduate degree in psychology. Total correlation to PR right?! I ended my degree on a co-op term working with the events team at the BC Lions. By the end, I was looking for a career I could meld my experience and passions for social media, people and events. I stumbled on the SFU PR Certificate Program on Twitter and have not looked back.

3. What do you enjoy most about PR? Conversely, what is the hardest part?

I enjoy the ability to work my creative juices. Coming from a very heavy and academic focused background, PR is so much more fun and the creative ideas are often the ones that get the most attention. The Hardest part is managing a variety of very different clients during busy times. When you’re in the middle of the busy season , it’s hard to juggle so many balls. You have to be calm (to maintain your own sanity) and you need to put all your efforts in equally for each client. That’s where an awesome team comes in!

4. What/who have been the resources and/or mentors throughout your career?

Twitter is the most amazing tool for mentors and inspiration. People who do social media right are often willing to answer your questions. I’m always curious about the ‘why’ and the ‘how,’ and I’m usually not afraid to ask. And always read! There is such a wealth of inspiration online. Following along with top content producers like LEvo League, Inc and Entrepreneur – you’ll have inspiration for days!

5. Biggest success so far? And biggest challenge (how did you overcome it)?

Landing my first pitch to a national broadcast on The Exchange with Amanda Lang was pretty exciting. I’m still early in my career so my first pitches are super memorable. The biggest challenge is working with a small team. Definitely jumping into the PR deep end but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I learn best by doing.

6. Favorite PR campaign?

I love PR campaigns that involve philanthropy. I love what London Drugs is doing with Pink Shirt Day or Coast Capital with #PinkItForward.

7. What’s the future look like for you? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’m looking to grow my leadership. I’d love to work on a team, and lead other people and campaigns. Maybe not within 5 years, but definitely 10.

8. Any words of advice for aspiring PR pros?

Know your media! Watch the news, read the news and read online. It is the basis of your career to know who is writing what!

9. Are you willing to be contacted for networking, coffee/tea, career advice, etc.?

Definitely, Tweet me @stephfowler_!
