Earlier this week HootSuite’s Quidditch team (yes, that same Quidditch played in Harry Potter just minus the flying), aptly named “Hedwig’s Army,” had their inaugural match against Team Mobify. It was a bright and sunny day for HootSuite’s first match ever, and people gathered in the tens and hundreds to watch these two teams duke it out on the pitch. Below are some photos I took of their 2 matches – Hootsuite (in blue) and Mobify (in grey) each came out with one win.
If you don’t believe that Quidditch is a real sport or if you’re simply interested in seeing athletes run around a field on brooms (come on, who wouldn’t?!), follow Hedwig’s Army on Twitter! They’ve got some great Tweets and post about Quidditch news, challenges, upcoming games and general Harry Potter good-ness.
Also, the International Quidditch Association (think MLG of gaming) will be hosting their biennial Quidditch Global Games in Vancouver this year! On July 19, teams from all across the globe will meet to crown a global Quidditch champion. For more information, visit their website.
Author’s note: This post may come as a surprise to some of my readers as it’s not about “traditional” marketing or social media per se. However, Quidditch has received some great marketing over the past few years, especially for such a young sport (began in 2005), much of which occurred primarily online. My Harry Potter-obsession aside, I think this is a great example of what community management, digital marketing, social media, PR and 110% drive and passion can accomplish.
